Equal pay

Find out the latest on equal pay from UNISON's national website.

UNISON is working hard to ensure all our members get fair treatment and equal pay at work. Major overhauls of pay and conditions packages across our public services have brought the issues of pay inequality to the fore.

UNISON has developed an equal pay strategy to challenge pay discrimination through a combination of negotiation and legal challenge where necessary.

Background

The Equal Pay Act has been in force since 1975 Employers & UNISON have a duty to close the gender pay gap by using the law in negotiation.
Getting equal pay has been slow but we are finally making progress. UNISON is requesting that posts to be looked at in respect of equal pay should initially be the former manual grades along with APT&C 1-3

Unequal pay has arisen because some manual workers who are mainly male have over the years been paid bonuses whilst others mainly female have not.

UNISON are in talks with management to put this right by bringing the female workers into line with the male workers. We will be keeping you informed of further developments.
