Fairtrade
Support Fairtrade!
As trade unionists we have a duty to show solidarity with our fellow
workers, not just at home in the UK, but in the wider world. One
area where trade unionists can do this and make real difference
to people's lives in the developing world is to buy Fairtrade products
when we shop.
Under the Fairtrade scheme producers in the developing world are
paid a premium above the market price for the products they produce.
This enables them to invest in their communities by, for example,
building schools, health care facilities and improving working conditions
and pay. Through this they can take more control over their lives.
Overall the Fairtrade scheme addresses the injustices of conventional
trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorer, weakest
producers.
There
are over 350 Fairtrade products to buy ranging from tea, coffee,
chocolate, sugar, wine and fruit to non- edibles like footballs.
Fairtrade products can be distinguished by the distinctive Fairtrade
mark. To find further information about Fairtrade and see the full
list of Fairtrade products available go to the website of the Fairtrade
Foundation at www.fairtrade.org.uk
