Save and protect lives

UNISON believes health and safety in the workplace is an issue for everyone. Every year, thousands of people suffer accidents and ill-health at work - most of which could be avoided.

Unions and health and safety laws save and protect lives. But many more could be protected from harm if health and safety laws were better enforced. We are campaigning for a new way of working, one that guarantees every worker a safe and healthy workplace.

Workers' Memorial Day

(April 2009) A flock of 25 white doves took flight over City Hall in Bradford to mark Workers’ Memorial Day on 28th April 2009. Each bird represented 2,000 workers who have been killed at, or because of, their job in the UK over the last year.

The event took place at noon by the workers’ memorial tree. More than 75 people joined in the tribute which was led by Carol Duerden, of Bradford Safety Reps Association. A minutes silence was observed before the doves were released. Jane Howie, speaking on behalf of the association said “When someone dies because of their work they are not the only victim - on average eight loved onesare severely affected.”
